Strike days - Episode III

Danger of Youtube postings

In this video, I am of course not serious about the potential danger of Bob... at least I hope there is no reason to be!
What I'm trying to say through this video, is it is impossible to know if people are being serious, if they are trying to set a trap for somebody, or if it's a misunderstanding.
So that would not be a good idea for the police or any entity to try and watch every post, article or video, because that would only make people feel more... guarded. That would increase the feeling that we have less and less privacy and would not really improve the security, as it is an impossible task to actually detect potential criminals.

The Good-gle, the Badgle and the Gugly

So yes, Google is everywhere.
Google does everything.
Google knows everything.

This is pretty scary, because Google rules the world. Google is my homepage. Google is my emails. Google is my agenda. Google is my videos (Youtube). Google tracks my clicks (or soon with Doubleclick). Google is my maps. Google is my directory. Google is my searches. Google is my blog.

The biggest issue according to me concerns privacy. Google has so much information about so many people, they can do whatever they want. It's not very comforting to know that our private life is not so private, and that a companies owns so many details about us.
But at the same time, I'm not too worried because I think the people at Google know that they can't take unfair advantage of the situation. Abuses would not be tolerated and would hurt them more than profit them. It is really not in their advantage to do that, so they will have to be careful with this concern.

Maybe it's time to relax and think what we can gain from this situation. More personalised tools and applications, for example!

Here is a blog about Google and its diverse possible uses!

E-culture vocabulary

The subject of new vocabulary used in e-culture is very interesting, and I chose this video to illustrate how the sms/instant messenging can affect the way we speak... and compose songs!

Dangerous emails

Yes, you'd better watch out how you write your emails!
Emails can be very useful, things can be explained simply, sent quickly, with attachments, and it's free. So yes, it is very easy and quickly done.
But especially for that, you'd better be careful.
Things are a lot more informal in emails. So it is so easy to forget you're not writing to your old friend but to your boss. People tend to shorten everything, and leave the nice and polite greetings and letter endings for paper letters. But politeness is expected on emails.
The tone of the email can also be misunderstood. And it's not always possible to put a smiley to make our point clear.
So a joke can turn into a real "quiproquo".

What to do? Re-read the email as if you were the recipient, trying to understand the double meaning of things. And a good tip is to look at how they wrote their email and copy their expressions.

You might also want to go online and look for email guidelines, they are all other the web!

Why they all want Facebook

If Microsoft paid $240 million only for 1.6 percent of Facebook, that must mean that this social networking site is very valuable.

Why is that? Why Microsoft is ready to put that much money in Facebook?
The partnership between the two is getting more and more important. Microsoft will be the exclusive advertising platform partner for Facebook, and will begin to sell advertising for Facebook internationally in addition to the United States.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook CEO, announced the launch of Facebook Ads, an advertising system that lets businesses connect with their target audience, roll out viral social ads, and track social activity on the site.

Sony Pictures, The Coca-Cola Company, Verizon Wireless and BlockBusters and already on board. Of course, because social networking sites have access to a lot of data about users. This includes their interests, friends, demographics, applications and groups. It is a very good way for advertisers to reach their target audiences with ads that speaks to users on a very individual basis.

Being involved with Facebook is also a way for Microsoft to try to differenciate from Google, as seen in the table (taken from this CNN article)

Will it blend?

or how brands can use Youtube succesfuly and costlessly:

You just have to speak the Web language, use the codes: self mockery, using the objects in an unusual way (like the Coke/Mentos series), speaking of common references ("I have to put this on e-bay), etc.

Web 2.0? Boooooriiiing!

I'm so tired of this Web 2.0 thing!!
I was listening to a very interesting radio broadcast when I realised something… Why do they always have to put name on things? Why do they always have to decide there are some evolutions that are revolutions, and that everything is going to change completely?
Does speaking of Web 2.0 means there is a new version of the web? Was there a Web 1.0, a web 1.9.8.3?
Ok, YouTube, Netvibes, 6Nergies, DailyMotion, Skype are really something huge these days, but it’s a normal evolution from what happened before! The uses evolve with the new ideas, the new software, but especially thanks to the advance of technology (the idea of posting videos online must have existed a looooong time ago, but it wasn’t possible at the 56k age).
Please, you people on the radio, you, the journalist, you, the advertiser, you, the teacher, stop saying we are now in a revolutionary mutation! We ALWAYS are mutating, so are our technologies. So just enjoy and stop thinking for once!
